Fort Irwin is totally in the middle of nowhere... haha. wink Yeah, it's smack dab between Los Angeles and Las Vegas (the latter of which we get to go to for a day for R&R, woot!), about a 3 hour drive from each, in the middle of the desert. With mountains. Very much like Afghanistan, I'm told.

Yeah, it's been raining and flooding like crazy here (and washing out our lines, arg) for the last few days. Today it's finally sunny and warm again (!), though it's still supposed to rain on and off. No hail that I've noticed, thank goodness.

I prefer cold and snowy to cold and rainy, by far. So I'm glad the weather's getting warmer again. I'm on the 16:00 to 24:00 shift and it gets really cold at night (I'm indoors, but we only have space heaters).

Your experience reminds me of an ex we did down in Florida one year back in the 90's. 1996 I think.  Anyways, it was during the winter months, and we were all looking forward to sunshine and warmth while using our American brothers' toys. (It was all about the MILES gear laser system then.)  Turns out the week we went was one of the coldest on record.  When we landed at  Jacksonville airport the pilot said 'Welcome to Jax....blah...blah...the temperature outside is -2C. '

We all laughed because we thought he was making a joke. (Canadian air force pilot).  Then I looked out at the ground crew and saw them in heavy coats and hats.

We woke up in the mornings and had frost all over our biv bags. Not what we were expecting in Florida.

Doing assault water crossings, a buddy of mine accidentally kicked a croc.  It was so lethargic with cold it was just like a log....it barely moved.

When we finally got back to Pet, we found out the week had been a balmy 18C or so up there.

Sometimes you just can't win.

But oh, that one blessed day off.... (we got to go to St. Augustine.)  Soldiers can cram a lot of partyin' into one day.  big grin

Seen, thanks. smile I've been looking for things for me and the fiance to do while we're there, because we're not really the drinking/gambling types. (Yeah, he's here in Cali too, but I never see him blank and probably won't aside from that one day. I can't even talk to him anymore because he's out so far he doesn't have cell reception.)

Haha, yeah. smile I've been on the other side of that too. Last summer it didn't really get hot in Ontario except in August, and I was in Wainwright for all of August where the weather was cool and perfect. big grin

LOL

That reminds me: we had a battalion parade the next day.  They were going to hand out the award for the top soldier...

The CO called his name three times...then a chain reaction of sgt majors passed a message up to the RSM, and then the parade continued.  Turns out he was in jail for the night due to a scrap.

FYI... (I guess that's what this whole thread is for...)

I'm back in Canada. Today is my last day off; back to work tomorrow.

I'm getting married on March 13th, then I'm going on a short week-long honeymoon (Niagara Falls... been there many times and it's not Hawaii, but not too bad wink), and then I need to spend lots of quality time with my man before he goes to Afghanistan. So I probably won't be around too much in the next month or so. I will be checking my emails though, so shoot me a PM if you need anything. smile

Glad you got some leave time.
Congrats on the nuptuals.
Hope you have a terrific day, and have fun in Niagra.

Alright, tomorrow I'm off on another adventure for the next month. I won't be far from home - there are a couple big summit meetings in Ontario this month - but I won't really be able to be here and do forum admin-like things. My internet will probably be scarce, but I will be able to read emails on my phone if I'm somewhere where I can charge it. smile

Take care, everyone, and be good for the mods. wink

I doubt I'll see you there.  Over 4000 cops for security and I'm just one of 'em.   wink

I'm back!

That was probably my best experience of my military career so far. I learned so much. smile

Anyways, carry on. When I get a minute I'll look into a way to prevent all the annoying spam this place has been subject to lately.
