Halo: Reach
« on: December 18, 2009, 12:47:17 AM »
Sooo those who watched Spike's VGA's saw the trailer for the new Halo game, and those who didn't have no doubt heard of or seen the video by now.

To be honest, my reaction was... meh. It looks like it'll just be another Halo game, nothing new, similar story, same gameplay. Y'know.

What do you peoples think?

It was a boring trailer yeah, but it didn't seem all bad...The new engine looks good anyway.

I really love the new trailer, especially the music, and seem to watch it everytime I go on my Xbox 360 dashboard.  Since I've seen it quite a lot now I've picked up on quite a few things in the trailer.

1. The girl in the blue armour (I think her accent was Russian) has a bionic right arm with a few armour plates attached,
2. The Spartan who says "Didn't think anyone survived Pegasi, sir" is George-052.
3. The 'commander' is Carter-259.  If you remember there were only 150 Spartans considered for the Spartan II program in the books, so he is unlikely to be from the same group as John and the rest.  He also isn't a Spartan III as '259' would put him in Alpha batch, and they were all killed during their mission, not to mention the fact he's too tall for an SIII and wearing the wrong armour.  It is possible he is from a second batch of SIIs as in the books it said after training the first lot of SIIs CPO Mendez was reassigned to train the next class.
4. The girl in the blue armour is numbered 320 (I can't read her name), which again would put her in a different class to the Spartans we know from the books.  It is possible from her number that the selection pool was widened to 200 otherwise her number would be below 300.
5. Carter liekly has the title commander due to being mission commander of that group of Spartans.  John-117 had the highest rank (of the known surviving Spartans) at Master Chief Petty Officer, until Kurt-051 gave a field promotion to Fred-104 during the events on Onyx, which means no Spartans held oficer ranks during the Human-Covenant war (2525 - 2552).
6. Due to the previous point, it means that the 'Lieutenant' is not likely a Spartan, even if he is as tall as them (then again, there are some people who grow to be very tall), unless Bungie are breaking from canon and making some of the second class of SIIs officers.
7. None of the Spartans are wearing the MJOLNIR Mk.V armour worn by John-117 and most other Spartans during the conflict on Reach.  Its possible this is a specialist group seperated from the others, or already stationed on Reach purposed for another mission.
8. One of the Spartans has the EVA armour variant (which did exist at the time) and has a very distinct skull-type pattern painted on their helmet.  No name or number are visible to me in the trailer.
9. The Spartan withthe sniper rifle on the new aircraft (not a Hornet as in Halo Wars they were more-or-less the same as in Halo 3) says "This our new number 6", showing that it's a 6-man team, and the posibility of 6-player co-op.
10. Carter mentions that the 'lieutenants' file had parts that ONI didn't want anyone to read.  Although all Spartans were part of ONI Section 3 (NavSpecWar), there were other units operating in ONI.  It is also possible that he is from another unit, like the Marine Corps, and has simply taken part in classified operations.

I'm sure this is true, but I'm equally sure that simply coming up with a new plot to recycle the same gameplay over and over again isn't going to work. Part of the problem that Halo is having (I think) is that the new game releases are coming to close together. Spreading out the FPS releases would be a much better strategy - look at the FPS games that have turned into a franchise. They didn't do by releasing so many games so close together, it was years between releases. Microsoft is pushing to hard to dominate and while that might serve them well in the computer application market, it's not going to work in the gaming market. You're going to end up with a glut of FPS games that are all inherently the same.

So there is a big controversy going on that the the 'Lieutenant'  is MC.   Supposedly, only 2 of 300 Spartan III's survived Pegasi, Tom-B292 & Lucy-B091.  It can't be Tom or Lucy because they are stuck in the Micro Dyson sphere with everyone else on Onyx, presumably.  They think MC was also a survivor but it was classified by ONI. ("Even the parts didn't want me too.")  Also MC arived on Reach AFTER the last battle had started. (sound familiar?) He also doesn't get MKV armor till after Reach.

...Thoughts?

So do I need to get the books to learn all the stuff Merle and Flyboy is speakin???
The  purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in
defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more
important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

Drake and I agreed on something. Somebody get the camera out to capture the moment.

It won't be MC because by the time he arrived to fight on the ground it was only CASTLE base that was left un-glassed.  Also, MC did get Mk.V armour before Reach as if he didn't he wouldn't have it in Halo 1!  The Spartans received Mk.V armour earlier in the war, however it was an early version with no shields.  The version with shields came the day they shipped out for Reach.  The Spartans mission was to find a Covenant ship, use Cortana to find the location of the Covenant homeworld, capture the leaders and force a treaty.  The Pillar of Autumn was the ship assigned to transport the Spartans as although it wasn't particularly fast it was capable of taking more of a beating then any other UNSC ship.  The Pillar of Autumn was on its way out of Reach to carry out the mission when the Covenant arrived.

Also, remember that Reach happened before the Battle of Earth.  Spartan Blue team didn't head to Onyx unitl shortly into the Second Battle of Earth.  It was then that they linked up with Kurt and the Spartan IIIs, along with Halsey, Kelly and CPO Mendez.  Then the events on Onyx occured which led to Halsey, CPO Mendez, the remaining SIIIs a the remainder of Blue team to enter the Micro-Sphere, while Kurt detonated a nuke to wipe out all the Covenant trying to get to the shield world portal (getting off a witty one-liner to an Elite who said he will die, 'Haven't you heard, Spartans never die.').

Another thing, because the Spartan IIIs were meant to be half-Spartans sent on literal suicide missions the program was kept very highly classified (hence why they 'killed' Kurt).  Not even Halsey, the founder of the Spartan II project, knew about it until around the time of the Second Battle of Earth so it is unlikely that any Spartan IIIs were known about by Spartan IIs during the events on Reach.

Halopedia is NOT a substitute for reading the books.
