I did not enjoy Halo. The plot was overly simple and lacking in any kind of depth or detail, and also completely unoriginal.

I'll point back to what I said about Battlefront II, because it relates here too: Video games that gave you some super human super strong character with super abilities to play as aren't fun. They aren't challenging. There's nothing to them. You aren't the hero - you're 'special' with 'special' powers not because of what you do or the choices you make or how good you are at the game but because the plot makes you that way. The best stories - and consequently, the best games - are the ones about the underdog that doesn't have the special genes and midi chlorines to make them the hero...but overcome this 'defect' to do the right thing and succeed against all odds anyway. (Coincidently, this is also why I hate Jedi.)

...and yet all the Spartan II's (excluding Master Chief) are dead. How Odd.

yeah, someone pointed out that there's an army of these amazing guys, and they get wiped out save for one, and he turns out to be more than enough... (yes, I know about the survivors at Onyx... they don't count, they weren't active...)

Why?

Drake is flamboyant, and may go over the top, but if he were not that extrovert then who would move things along?

Interesting article.  There is another one (well, video actually) on the Game Informer wesite about the development team working on Reach.

http://gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2010/01/12/meeting-the-reach-team.aspx

Might have to try that sniper rifle trick mentioned at the end at some point.... :P

EDIT

Ooh, the Xbox mag I bought today has a Halo Reach preview in it, including 4 small screenshots.

From what the article says these screenshots were posted on the NeoGAF and MLG forums last November and are from analpha version of the first 3 levels.

Accoriding to the article these are the first 3 missions:

1. Regrouping with the other Spartans whilst fighting Elites and driving a 5-man Warthog.
2. Escorting another Spartan to allow her to hack an AA-battery to destroy enemy Banshees who are engaging Hornets overhead.
3. Night-time, cliffside stealth mission featuring player and one other Spartan.

New features of the engine include a 'sprint device' and a new cloaking device which dampens both vidual and audio on the player.

Well, if you ask me, I can't wait for the multiplayer beta  :D So, judging by those leaked screenshots, this is a squad based game :D And (hopefully), like RC :D

I bet it wins an award for being the first original squad based shooter, too.

I don't know, I'm pretty sure everyone has at least heard of the Ghost Recon series.

Also, I'm not sure if it will be a proper RC-like squad shooter.  I reckon the squad part will only really play like how MC and the Arbiter worked as a team in Halo 3.  While they were to an extent a team as they fought together in every mission, they didn't work like in normal squad shooters and from what the magazine said about the first few mission I don't think there will be any real squad controls, just you and a load of AI players moving along set paths at around the same rate as you.

I'm sure they all heard of Doom, Duke Nuke'em, and...I dunno, Half-Life before HALO came out. But apparently it's still a revolutionary original FPS concept.

No.

Just better and more popular.

So we're back to this again. What was better, exactly? Because no one has ever established that. Everyone just says HALO WAS BETTER. Well okay. Donkey Kong was better. I said it, it's on the internet, it must be true.

The fact of the matter is that HALO is not better, and not differant, and not revolutionary, but was celebrated and awarded for being just that thing by people who are too ignorant to be aware of the history of video games (IE: The up and coming generation, which thinks every time it reinvents the wheel it's done something new unique and fantastical [IE: Avatar]).

My only hope for the ignorant masses that worship at the alter of HALO is that now that HALO is stomping on something they are intimately familiar with (IE: Republic Commando) they will wake up and realize that HALO is just cloning other FPS games...and getting awards for it.

(For the Record: whoever mentioned Ghost Recon should be shot, since Ghost Recon was an expansion on the Rainbow Six line of games...which were the original 'modern' Squad Based shooters. This is exactly what I am talking about above about the wheel and the history of video games. If you want to get into it even more you could say that the SWAT games came first, but as they are arcade games and not traditional shooters, they don't really fall into the same category of gaming. There was also the Delta Force series of games, I am not sure if they came before or after R6, but they certainly weren't in the modern gaming 'revolution' so to speak. If anyone knows when the first Delta Force was released, please let me know so I can properly adjust my encyclopediac brain.)

You basically said that Halo is better known and more celebrated then other FPS games that came out before it, and if it were a squad game it would probably be celebrated as an original game.  I mentioned GR because while I know there were other squad shooters before (and don't get me wrong, I do like the Rainbow Six games), it seems to me like GR, especially the GRAW games, are the most well known squad shooters (with the Ghosts and Ghost Leader Cpt Mitchell making additional appearances in HAWX and EndWar) and the most likely to be compared to by gamers should Reach be a squad shooter.

Just poking my little head in here for a sec...
Halo's a blast and all, but Half-Life did come first and it's waaay better.  Story, gameplay--Half-Life pwns all Halos.

Carry on. :P

Guys, I though we already decided that the Halo story arc, and the gameplay is are nothing new or original!

Its just that they did better job of luring in fans!   Now, its just something almost every gamer wants/likes to play.
