What to post here...
« on: December 27, 2006, 07:44:22 PM »
This forum is for discussion of everything related to clones or Republic Commandos in written fiction. Want to discuss Omega squad? Wonder what will happen to Etain with Order 66? Think Kal is great or Vau is scary? All that goes in this forum!

A note about spoilers: Right now I'm not going to nail down a specific spoiler policy. We don't really need one, as the last RepCom fiction was Triple Zero, and it was released almost a year ago. Still, it's generally nice to keep big spoilers (especially big ones, like major character deaths or plot twists) out of thread titles, and give a warning in the title that the thread will discuss spoilers. That way people who haven't finished the item in question can steer clear if they wish. Anyways, all this will be evaluated when the next book is released, because I know that some people hate to know what happens before they get there (I am one of them). For now, don't worry about it too much.

I think that TC was an awesome book but I was surprised about the outcome. I definately did not imagine what would happen. Kal is amazing any way you look at him. Ordo is awesome as well.

I just finished Hard Contact and have just started Triple Zero. I loved the first one and the Second one is amazing. They way Karen Traviss wrote them makes me feel; from angry to sad. I love books that make me feel for the characters, connect with them, sympathize so to speak.

I also have a general question do you pronounce Fi as: Fee or Fye? Fye as in Five.

Fi as in Five. It's a numerical-based nickname like Niner; notice how Fi's ID number ends in a five?

Not exactly, Fi also comes from Fierfek, and fierfek is pronounced FI-ear-fek.

Yes, but we don't know what Kal's intentions were when he name Fi.

We could ask KT...

That's incorrect. You can hear Boss pronounce it 'fear-fek' while on the Prosecutor, after slicing a Data Core.

I just said what it means... isn't it obvious why he calls  Fi "son".

Fierfek is pronounced, two syllables, as Feer-fekk. Emphasis on the first syllable. Check the dictionary.

No need. True Colors, the scene with Etain playing medic. Outright states that names like Niner and Fi are numerical based. Look for yourself.

Fi is high galactic for son.

So sure are you?

Quote
High Galactic was a language often used to show respect between members of the clergy and laymen. Sarcev Quest was fluent in High Galactic.

High Galactic was also used as the language of the Imperial court and elite, as most officers from prestigious families were familiar with High Galactic.

Additionally, the language was also an ancient language used by the Jedi order. An example of this usage would be many of the names of their lightsaber forms.

1) Nowhere does it say Kal named Fi. Nowhere does it say he trained him since birth, either, and common sense would dictate that in that case the nickname developed naturally from his vode.

2) "Clergy and laymen", "imperial court", and "jedi order". No, I don't think Kal would have used High Galactic, even if he did name Fi.

3) There are two characters during the course of RC named Fi. One of them is, if I recall, a clonetrooper. Are you suggesting a clonetrooper (and I'm willing to bet his number ended in five but I don't have my book on hand to check) was close enough to a father figure that someone would have referred to him as son? That's a stretch. Also a stretch is two different people to name two different clones -- of different classes entirely -- the same name in the Star Wars equivalent of ancient Latin. Unlikely. Fi = Five. Niner = Nine. The other Fi also = Five. Sev = Seven, if I recall correctly. It's their ID numbers.

Its not pronounce 'feh' its more like 'fie'. You know, like saying 'hi', but replacing the 'H' with 'F'. His name is short for 'five'. I'm just sayin... :dead:

Do you have a space bar?

Drake is flamboyant, and may go over the top, but if he were not that extrovert then who would move things along?

^He got giddy with Fi. His personality is contagous^

Anyway, I say fierfek as FI-err-FECK and Fi as in Hi just with "F" instead of "H" (Like 38). And it is confirmed by the novel, when Etain was playing medic, that the names are based on numbers.
