Ok, so he doesn't think he can kill another human being. Completely understandable.
But if he calls the Insurrectionists 'innocent civilians', he's just a fool. They're terrorists. They blow up innocent civilians. If you don't want to kill them, that's ok. But don't call them innocent. If they wanted to solve their problems peacefully, they wouldn't be killing civilians. Plain and simple.
I definitely see why they chose this as a place for character development, because the obvious answer to his killing problem is not to join the military. He has the extreme pressure from his family to join and perform accordingly, but he doesn't think he could ever kill anyone, and doesn't want to be there.
Good conflict, I'm just a personality type that gets very grated by willful ignorance and stupidity.
