what happened today?
« on: January 15, 2012, 05:01:44 PM »
A couple days ago I got to walk in three houses from the 1800s. I also got to go in a musium. The oldest book there was from the 1700s! They also they had a news paper from 1888. The building its self was from the early 1900s. Although it was not always a musium. It was originally a train station.-Captain Ethan.

My first instinct when reading that post is "that's not really that old at all!"  But, I guess that comes from growing up in a country which has evidence of settlement since the Stone Age, and has historical monuments like Stone Henge and Hadrian's Wall.  Even my house could be considered old by your standards as its Edwardian (around 1913 I think).

Still, its always great to see people take an interest in history.  And speaking of history, I was encouraged by my aunt today to download the Amazon Kindle app for my smartphone where I found out about their free "Popular Classics" range.  So, after much browsing I got a couple of historical books on Britain and read the first dozen-or-so pages of A History of England - Part I where I got up to just after the end of the Roman occupation.  I didn't really find out anything I didn't already know from reading it (but then, the book is originally from the 19th century and so their facts weren't as up-to-date as ours), although I did find it interesting reading how the Roman occupation ended (around 448 A.D, when the Roman Empire started to fail).  Still, for more on the Roman occupation of Britain I have another Kindle book devoted to the subject.

So, other then that, my day has been pretty much playing Fable II, doing a bit more work on my website while I wait for my domain transfer to go through so I can finally start getting my new version online, and this evening I went out to dinner with my family for my aunt's birthday.

Same thought here. The curse of being European I guess. If you can count the British Isle as a part of Europe, and not some cancerous growth.

Though I've never lived in Europe, I still had the same reaction, just being a history buff :P  But I agree with flyboy, its always great to see people get interested in history.

So today has actually been a pretty busy day for me at home.  This morning I started work on getting the new version of my website fully up and running now my new hosting account has been fully configured, only to find the auto-install feature for phpBB3 didn't let me customise it the way I wanted.  So, I left it and after lunch went to set-up my dad's new wireless printer which was way easier then I expected.  Apart from inserting the ink cartridges, everything was just a case of pressing the next button and occasionally selecting an option.  As it's an all-in-one it did a self-assessment on the alignment page it printed and the PC software automatically configured it in windows as a wireless printer so I didn't even need to plug it in to a computer!

After that, I cleared out a load of my old games from the shelf above the family computer (which isn't actually used at all any more as I have my own desktop and everyone else has their own laptops).  When I say old games, I mean so old they have those massive cardboard boxes that games form the '90s came in before the switch to the plastic cases you get them in now, so old that the recommended processing power is measured in MHz, and my copy of the B-Wing expansion for Star Wars X-wing is even on a floppy disk!  It does seem a bit of a shame getting rid of some of them as I have fond memories of playing a lot of them (some though I couldn't get working, or just never got around to playing), but its unlikely I'm going to play most of them so I've kept a few and the rest (15 I believe the last count was at) will be given to a charity shop at some point.

For the next few hours I did a load more website work changing various pathnames within the PHP files to match up to my web hosting account rather then the XAMPP environment I've been testing in, as well as uninstalling the phpBB3 forum I installed in the morning and doing a custom install instead, which has allowed em not only to have the latest version but also customise it with a new style and make a couple of modifications.

Then it was more Fable II, not only getting the 100G achievement for having a 2.5 million gold real estate worth but also getting a load of silver keys I'm missing before I start Fable III which I'm hoping to arrive in the post some time this week.  And finally just now I watched a program on BBC iPlayer all about stargazing which talked a lot about the moon, which was very interesting to watch.

So, lets hope tomorrow is a bit more relaxed, with probably only a few more tweaks to my website and lots more Fable II (and hopefully the start to Fable III).

Looking at what Google and Wikipedia are doing to raise awareness about PIPA and SOPA here in the US, you can really see how much more intelligent the people at Google are.

Wikipedia forces all English speaking people(including non-Americans) to a black page with a box that says "Zip Code". You type it in, and it gives you the contact information for your local Congressmen. Instead of getting angry at the US government, I get angry at Wikipedia for imposing a restriction on the user it is trying to protect.

Google, on the other hand, has a simple black label over the "Google" at the top, and if you click on it it brings you to a page talking about the acts. It then asks you to sign a petition off to the right. Now, since Google made it a option, and gave easy means to do so, I felt inclined to join in, not spurn the company for screwing the user over. Also, Google hasn't been lobbing those bull "A cry for help from Wikipedia article writer X" for months.

Well it snowed more, so after 3 hours of sledding, me and my 6 friends decided to build a giant igloo.

It took 5 hours and a lot of snow, but seven people can comfortably sit inside it.

You know you've spent a good snow day when by the end of the day you've spent so much time playing in the snow that you're sick of it.

By "style" I mean "beret, leather jacket, polo, slacks, and shillelagh" (AKA my standard wandering-around gear) and by "terrifyingly similar to me" I mean "I sometimes forget I'm not talking to myself"... It's amazing...

I was also kind of pissed at how Wiki, (and others), chose to draw our attention to their plight. Like you said, all they really did was punish the end user.

I much preferred Google's approach.

- Nice !!!
IMO, shillelaghs are a must have for standard walking-around gear.
[I'll even accept walking sticks, (with hidden blades), that are used to beat and slice homeless people - (a la Clockwork Orange)

Today was my first day volunteering for a local charity.  They specialise in recycling, disposal and refurbishing of old computers and have many big companies as well as a lot of local schools that donate to them.  I'm currently in for two taster days, today and tomorrow, and hopefully from there I can go on to continue being a volunteer with them.

Also, I decided just now to finally pre-order Mass Effect 3 Collectors Edition as I'll have enough money in my second bank account to pay for it, and of course when I go to pre-order it the Xbox 360 version is sold out.  I can still pre-order collectors edition for PC and PS3, but I only have saves on the Xbox and won't play on either of those platforms so standard edition it is then. :(

I have just booked travel to beautiful sunny Southern Cal.

I fly into LAX on Saturday; and am staying in Carpinteria for the night.

Can any of our So. Cal. vode recommend any S/W related (or other cool stuff) venues, displays, activities. etc. (e.g comic book stores, or gigantic lego models of Captain Rex, etc)[I'm pretty much open to anything]?

-Where's Steve Sansweet's private storehouse, anyway?
[Nevermind, I just looked it up - it's all the way up North]

Thank you

Sorry man, I don't really know of any SW-related sites to see here in SoCal.

However, I could give you a list a mile long of things to see in general xD
